The New Year Kicks Off With Chainsaw Mayhem
BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS By Movietube | Movietubenow FOR THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 4-6 2013
There are two new films opening in wide release this weekend: Leatherface haunts theatres once again in Lionsgate’s remake/reboot Texas Chainsaw 3D and Matt Damon and John Krasinski star in environmental drama Promised Land from Focus Features. Texas Chainsaw 3D should fare okay (at least for the first weekend) while Promised Land will likely have a difficult time grabbing hold at the box office primarily due to a low theatre count of about 700 theatres. FilmGo.net is estimating that the Top 10 will generate about $110.6 million over the weekend, down about 9% from last year when The Devil Inside and Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, both from Paramount led the overall Top 10 to a total of $120.5 million.
Texas Chainsaw 3D from Lionsgate is yet another remake of the cult horror hit from the 70’s. The original film spawned a few sequels and was then remade in 2003 by New Line Cinema. The reboot, which should be noted, came out at a time when remakes were exciting to audiences, opened with a strong $28.1 million and showed fairly impressive legs (for a horror film) carving up a final domestic gross of $80.6 million. Three years later, a prequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning opened with a still decent $18.5 million but topped out at only $39.5 million. Both films were released in October to take advantage of the Halloween horror loving crowd but the second film had the misfortune of facing off with Saw III, which was the dominant horror series of the time.
Fast forward a few years later and Texas Chainsaw 3D is entering into a way different marketplace than New Line’s reboot did in 2003. Audiences are beyond tired of remakes at this point so the film will be opening with less fanfare than the 2003 version. The latest film does have the 3D element which should help a bit, but audiences have grown sick of that fad as well. While the film will bring in diehard fans of the series and horror alike, there is very little room for crossover appeal. You are either in to chainsaw mayhem or you are not. A bright spot for the film is that the horror audience has been underserved as of late and January has traditionally been a good time of the year to release a fright flick. Look for Texas Chainsaw 3D to slice up about $16.5 million this weekend.
Promised Land from Focus Features stars Matt Damon as a salesman for a natural gas company who changes his way of thinking after visiting a small town that his company wants use for their natural resources. The film directed by Gus Van Sant, co-stars John Krasinski, who co-wrote the script with Damon(Watch online Movie- Movietubenow). Promised Land is only opening in about 700 theatres so it is doubtful that it will make much impact at the box office. Mixed reviews from critics will certainly not convince moviegoers that this is a film they need to see, especially with films like Django Unchained, Les Miserables and even Jack Reacher and Silver Linings Playbook serving as a distraction. The films biggest asset is of course Matt Damon, but his track record at the box office isn’t as great as many people think. In between the monster hits such as the Bourne films and the Ocean’s trilogy, Damon has had several box office disappointments such as Invictus, Hereafter, Green Zone and The Informant. The film opened last weekend in only 25 theatres and collected a fairly underwhelming $7,000 per screen, indicating that this is not one of the films that Damon’s fanbase is going to support. I expect Promised Land to debut with about $3.5 million this weekend.

Predictions for the Weekend of January 11-13 2013 By MovieTubeNOw
There are three new films opening in wide release during the weekend of January 11-13: After being pushed back from last September, Warner Bros. finally releases 1930’s crime drama Gangster Squad starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow follows up The Hurt Locker with Sony’s Zero Dark Thirty, based on the true story behind the decade long search for Osama Bin Laden and Open Road Films releases horror spoof A Haunted House starring Marlon Wayans who also serves as co-writer. Gangster Squad should do well due to its cast especially since it has been a long time since Penn appeared in a mainstream tough guy kind of role. Zero Dark Thirty will likely gross more in its opening weekend than The Hurt Locker did in its entire run due to tremendous award season buzz, but do audiences really want to watch a film about the hunt for Bun Laden? Most war themed films centered on any aspect of the War on Terror have failed at the box office up until now. A Haunted House could over-perform due to the lack of comedies in the marketplace but after four Scary Movies and a fifth on the way, audiences may have become tired of the horror spoof genre.
